Fifth Annual Conference - San Francisco - March 11-14

More than fifty Fulbrighters are giving presentations about their work during the FAST Fifth Annual Conference:  Sustainability: Fulbright Scholars Shaping Tomorrow's Future Today.

The draft program, which includes the names of many of the speakers and information about the Sunday Seminars and the Tours has been posted to the FAST website. Mrs. Harriet Fulbright (the widow of Senator Fulbright) will be one of the speakers during the opening gala. (click here for the program)

The six major topic areas are Energy, Natural Resources, Government & Policy, Media & Communications, Architecture & Urban Planning, and Sustainability Education. The program also includes full-day "Sunday Seminars"; the executive education professional development seminars will lead to specific recommendations and alumni collaborations on (A) Entrepreneurism, (B) Global Health, (C) Sustainable Agriculture and (D) FAST Futures, which is addressing the 2010-12 expansion plans for the Fulbright Academy.

The variable registration fee ($150-$450) makes the conference accessible to the full range of Fulbrighters, and FAST has negotiated a discounted rate for accommodations at the Hilton Hotel. As at prior conferences, our program includes visits to other sites, such as the Golden Gate National Recreation Area/Crissy Field Center, the David Brower Center, the San Francisco Cable Car Museum, the Delancey Street Foundation, the Marine Mammal Center, the PG&E Pacific Energy Center and the California Academy of Sciences.

Human Values & Sustainability Forum - in New Jersey

FAST and the FDU Institute for Sustainable Enterprise are hosting a day-long forum on Human Values & Sustainability, held at FDU's Madison Campus (30 minutes west of New York City).  The forum on April 13 has speakers from the business and academic community as well as opportunities for the 100 participants to share their unique knowledge with others.  (Click here for registration information)

January 20-21, Washington, DC

Earlier this year, FAST participated in the second meeting of the AAAS Science & Human Rights Coalition. This Coalition is a network of scientific membership organizations that recognizes a role for science and scientists in efforts to realize human rights. Launched in January 2009, the aim of the Coalition is to facilitate communication and partnerships on human rights within and across the scientific community, and between the scientific and human rights communities. January 20-22, San Francisco, CA

To spread the word about the upcoming conference, FAST is organizing two networking events in San Francisco in January. The events will be similar to the after-work receptions that are held on a regular basis at sites around the world and the "Distinguished Alumni Luncheons" held each fall with the board of directors. If you are in the Bay Area and wish to attend a dinner or lunch at the end of next week, please respond to this email.

FAST is working with the University on a Forum on International Research. The forum will bring in Fulbright speakers from the business and academic community. The target audience is students, post-docs and younger faculty at UD and other academic institutions as well as interested members of the public in the greater Denver area. Anniversaries of Exchange Agreements
A celebration 60 years of Australia-US Fulbright Exchanges will take place during a special presentation dinner at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. This is follow-up to a special reception at Australia's Embassy in Washington, DC, last fall.  Other special Anniversaries of Exchange agreements in 2010 are the 50th Anniversary of Fulbrights with Portugal and with Uruguay (agreements signed on March 19, 1960 and July 22, 1960).  Other round numbers in 2010 are Chile (signed March 21, 1955), Hungary (Dec. 6, 1990), India (Feb. 2, 1950), Korea (April 28, 1950), Mexico (Nov. 20, 1990), Pakistan (Sept. 23, 1950), Thailand (July 1, 1950).  (Click here for the Websites of the Commission in Portugal and the Commision in Uruguay).  

National Institute of Standards and Technology - Webinar on Research Funding Programs. January 20, 4:00-5:00pm ET (1:00-2:00am PT) Speaker: Dr. Lorel Wisniewski, Deputy Director of NIST's Technology Innovation Program, and moderated by Brice Nelson, Collaborations Advisor, Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America.  The NIST Technology Innovation Program (TIP) offers opportunities for cost-shared funding to assist U.S. businesses and institutions of higher education or other organizations, such as national laboratories and nonprofit research institutions, to support, promote, and accelerate innovation in the U.S. through high-risk, high-reward research in areas of critical national need. TIP can award funds to single small or medium sized companies for up to 3 years, or to joint ventures for up to 5 years. Universities may lead or participate in a joint venture, or they may be a contractor or informal partner on any TIP project. During this webinar, Dr. Wisniewski will discuss recent and prospective TIP opportunities that facilitate university-industry research collaborations to conduct high-risk, high-reward research in areas of critical national need. She will explain the features of TIP and describe opportunities to participate in the TIP process of determining critical national need topics that may form the scope of future TIP competitions. International Institute for Languages and Cultures (INLAC) is in the twelve centuries old Medina of Fez, which boasts the oldest university in the Islamic world. Co-founded by Fulbright scholars Fatima Sadiqi and Moha Ennaji, INLAC is a private institute which is accredited by the Moroccan Ministry of Education. It welcomes students from top American and European universities and offers a combination of courses, think thanks, and homestay in a unique environment. The Institute also brings together academics, theologians, politicians, and social activists to discuss the urgent issues of our time. These range from new divinities, the inter-religious, the inter-cultural to conflict resolutions, youth concerns, gender, development, human rights, social justice and much more.
