Sustainable Cities - Sustainable Development
The Academy's Seventh Annual Conference
United Arab Emirates - September 30 - October 3, 2012
Presented under the Patronage of H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Chancellor, Higher Colleges of Technology

Presented under the Patronage of H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the UAE, the four-day program in the fall of 2012 brought together Fulbright scholars and distinguished guests from Europe, North America, the Caribbean and the Middle East.

Our focus was cultural and scientific exchange, bridge-building, innovation, and sustainability -- fulfilling Senator Fulbright’s vision of fostering international exchange and contributing to peace at a time when, all too often, it seems that the world is focused on the differences among cultures, religions and peoples. The conference provided learning platforms from key actors in the UAE society – from senior cabinet level members to students to the board room of top firms. In addition to leading academic researchers, we also had the CEOs of Bee’ah, Ankabut, Integrated Waste Solutions, and Envirolog on-hand to share innovations related to sustainability being pioneered commercially in the UAE and USA.
At the opening ceremony, H.E. Sheikh Nahayan congratulated the delegates for their "constructive thinking about sustainable cities and sustainable development", calling them "imaginative, creative and innovative team of thinkers and supporters" who support such initiatives. His Excellency said that while the United Arab Emirates had embraced the concept of sustainability "quite naturally", "our actions and beliefs must engage with those of other nations around the globe. We are all in one single world, a world that we must all sustain together" to truly make a difference to the environment.
The sustainability focus of the conference brought together experts to discuss many facets of the topic - from water, energy, society, recycling and technology to public health, public policy, education, and the built environment. One sponsor Integrated Waste Solutions (IWS) enabled the Fulbright Academy to make a genuine contribution to helping the UAE integrate sustainability into their existing and future plans with their innovative solutions for recycling, food waste and water reuse. In a country that has gone from having 1376 cubic meters of water per capita (per annum) in 1962 to having a mere 20 cubic meters per capita in 2012, the Fulbright Academy is literally catalyzing change in tangible ways through knowledge sharing and dialogue that goes beyond the academic to the realm of execution.
