FAST Sixth Annual Conference & Ideas Festival
Fulbrighters - Changing the World with Social Science
University of Heidelberg & Crowne Plaza Hotel
Heidelberg, Germany -- March 16-19, 2011
The FAST Sixth Annual Conference will be hosted by the University of Heidelberg. 2011 is the 625th Anniversary of the Founding of the University of Heidelberg, and the FAST Conference is one of many programs taking place in 2011 in conjunction with the university's celebration.
Suggested Themes for 2011: Social Science
- Business and Social Science - the science of marketing
- Business and Social Science - the science of managing staff
- Social Science and Global Health Diplomacy
- Fulbrighters and Philanthropy
- The Science of Happiness - Csikszentmihalyi and other Fulbrighters
- Social Science and Climate Change Policy
- Human Rights and the Fulbright Community
How are Fulbright scholars in business, government, NGO and higher education working - individually or collaboratively - to prepare for and secure a better future?
Plenary lectures will lead into workshops giving all participants the opportunity to explore the role of social sciences and the application of social sciences to social well-being. The conference will build upon the outcomes of previous FAST programs while also promoting some of the most current developments. During the past five years, FAST conferences and workshops have been held in Ecuador, Germany, Macedonia, Morocco, Qatar, Singapore and the USA.
Social Science can include:
Anthropology, Behavioral science, Business administration, Cultural studies, Economics, Education, Environmental sciences, Geography, History, Journalism, Law, Linguistics, Medical sciences, Organizational change, Political science, Psychology, Public Health, Public administration, Sociology, and Urban planning
At this conference, the 200-250 participants will discuss current topics in social science, economics, business development, law and public policy, and the application of social sciences to issues such as climate change, global health, technology innovation, wealth creation and social change.
As a multi-disciplinary, multi-national, multi-generational conference, it does not follow the model of a typical "science conference," where the focus is interaction with a peers. FAST conferences are designed to broaden you horizons by bringing you together with Fulbright scholars and experts who are not in your usual circle of communication.
The 2010 Conference in San Francisco had participants from 29 countries, aged 22 to 82. As with other FAST programs, the conference is designed for Fulbright alumni, hosts, and friends, but registration is open to the public.
Optional workshops will take place on the opening and closing days of the conference, covering topics such as entrepreneurship and global health. These workshops will each be led by a committee of Fulbright scholars and volunteers.
The cost for attending the conference is $450. The price includes a gala dinner with wine from around the world, networking lunches, and tours of Heidelberg.
FAST is seeking sponsors so that discounts can be available to certain groups. For example, national Fulbright alumni associations can nominate one person to receive a 66% discount on registration ($150). Reduced rates may also be available for "alumni in transition."
